Calabria: 5 things you won’t forget

I stayed 4 days in Calabria together with a dear friend of mine and her large family. Here are the 5 things you need to remember and that you will not forget after being there.

1. Feed me
The stereotype is that if you go to stay with a family in the south of Italy, you will gain 1 kilo per day barely by eating at mealtimes. That is true. The food is awesome (I’ve never eaten fresher cucumbers!), the quantity and variety are absolutely in excess compared to what your stomach can contain, grandma is always insisting on filling your plate. Since I came back I’m always hungry :(

2. Shout it loud
You don’t speak normally, you shout, because otherwise grandma won’t be able to hear you. And remember to learn local dialect!

3. Blue sea, blue sky
The most beautiful views, both with the rain and with the sun. The most breathtaking sunsets. The sight of these wonderful places is so overwhelming that they almost make you cry. Get ready with a good camera to capture these moments. But first, enjoy them with your whole heart and soul.

4. Free hugs, free kisses
Italians are proud to be Italians. You will not hear English, but be sure that everyone you meet will be as warm as if you were part of their family.

5. Open your heart
Time is flexible. You don’t have to rush to respect deadlines or whatever. You can take life slowly and taste its beauty. Love freely all the people you meet. Open up your heart and soul to the beauty of Mediterranean Italy.

Thank you Calabria.
